Want to check the recyclability of a packaging? CEREC is at your service

A committee at your disposal for paper-board

CEREC (Comité d'Evaluation de la Recyclabilité des Emballages papier-Carton, the Paper-Board Packaging Recyclability Assessment Committee) is a technical expert committee created by Eco-Emballages and Revipac for paper-board packaging. In creating it, they wanted to help companies that place packaging on the market to assess their technical choices with regard to the recyclability of their packaging, while offering them, if necessary,  ways of optimising it.

Naturally, CEREC carries out its work within the framework of the regulations in force in France and in compliance with the essential requirements (see decree 98-638) to which packaging is subject, in particular the recyclability requirement.

Eco-Emballages CITEO has been entrusted since 1992 with a mission of general interest: to organise, supervise and support the sorting of household packaging in France. Its missions:

  • Getting the French to sort their waste
  • Supporting recycling
  • Making packaging progress

Revipac is the paper-board packaging sector, committed to giving Eco-Emballages the guarantee of take-back and recycling of household paper-board packaging for the local authorities that so wish. Revipac brings together various professional organisations: PROCELPAC, ONDEF, FFC, CHAMBRE SYNDICALE DES SACS PAPIERS, ELIPSO, REVIPAP.

 The mission of CEREC

The mission of CEREC can be summarised in five main points:

1 • facilitate the integration of packaging into the recycling chain by taking its end of life into account from the design stage, in order to optimise the recovery of waste from both an economic and an ecological standpoint

2 • offer technical support to the requesting customer and help them in assessing the feasibility of recycling their packaging

3 • provide answers and methodology that take account of changes in waste streams and technologies and issue a technical opinion on the packaging project submitted to it

4 • propose avenues for improvement and make available to them a knowledge base on the impact of the different components of their packaging at the time of recycling

5 • develop an operational guide making it possible to assess the level of recyclability of the packaging and of its various components.

 How it works

To govern its operation, CEREC has drawn up a charter signed by the two entities.

Two areas of work:

1 • Assessment of the recyclability of a packaging (or of one of its components) in the form of a technical opinion at the request of a manufacturer.

2 • Building a knowledge base available to manufacturers in the form of a general opinion.
