How to calculate the size of a trash bag?

To choose the right bin bag, it is essential to know how to calculate its size to guarantee that it fits your bin perfectly. Bin bag size affects waste collection and day-to-day waste management. In this article, we explain how to measure the size of a bin bag, determine its capacity in litres and choose a suitable bag for each type of waste. You will also find examples to help you select the right capacity for different bin sizes.

Calculating the capacity of a bin bag in litres

To calculate the size of a bin bag in litres, you will need to know its dimensions.
➡️ Multiply the height, width and depth of the bag in centimetres, then divide by 1000 to obtain the capacity in litres.

Example: a bag measuring 70 cm in height, 50 cm in width and 30 cm in depth will have a capacity of (70 x 50 x 30) / 1000 = 105 litres.

💡 Practical tip: for a perfect fit, add 10 to 15 cm to the height of the container to allow for the closure or the drawstring.

Choosing the right size for the bin

It is crucial to select the right bin bag size to avoid tears and make waste sorting easier.

• A bag that is too small will fill up quickly and may leak.

• A bag that is too large will be difficult to handle and will increase plastic usage.

👉 By choosing a sturdy bin bag made of high-density or low-density polyethylene as required, you improve resistance and the positive impact on the environment, especially with biodegradable, compostable or cradle-to-cradle certified models that support the circular economy.
